\n\nShe starts all advice with “I tell my kids\u2026”
\nWhen really she’s talking about her students.
\nI do not remember the words
\nThat were said; though it felt important
\nAt the time.
\n\nThe familiar \u201cWhat I\u2019m trying to say..\u201d
\nAnd the \u201cYou\u2019re not listening\u201d
\nPing-ponging back and forth
\nA volley of misunderstanding that culminates
\nIn a murmured apology.
\nMy concession of defeat,
\nEnumerating my wrongs, my learnings.
\n\nMy mom retreats, turns in on herself.
\nHiding in plain sight at her usual spot,
\nStanding outside on the balcony,
\nWatering her plants in the pouring rain
\nBecause it was easier than having
\nTo say her own apologies to me.
