Welcome to the first publication of the Université de Neuchâtel’s Introduction to Creative Writing course.
This seminar is offered to second- and third-year students who are studying English as a foreign language. While some of the students have written creatively before, many are writing poems and short stories in English for the first time.
The work you see here was all produced during Fall 2020 in response to weekly prompts. Over the course of the semester, students wrote five poems and five short stories. Every week they also read literary texts and critiqued work by several classmates. They spent the semester living like writers: writing to deadline (whether inspired or not!), reading for craft, and participating in a community.
During non-pandemic semesters, we end the term with a public reading. This year we’ve made a course literary magazine instead. The poems and short stories shared here were chosen by the students who wrote them.
